Ely
Ely is an ideal place to tour East Anglia Historic Cambridge is 20 minutes away, Racing at Newmarket is 15 minutes away, and the Norfolk Heritage coast is only an hour away.
Closer to hand are Wicken Fen, Thetford Forest and the Welney Wetland and Wildfowl Reserve, winter home to the famous Bewicks swans.
Ely itself is dominated by the magnificent Norman Cathedral, dating from the 11th century, which had its beginnings when St Ethelreda founded a Christian community in Ely as far back as 673. A visit to the remains of the Benedictine monastery, the Lady Chapel, the Octagon Tower, and the stained-glass museum will provide an absorbing trip through Ely's History. Our award-winning museum in Market Street tells the fascinating story of the Isle of Ely, and the city from the Ice Age to modern times. There are even prisoners in the cells!
Oliver Cromwells house is open all year round with exhibitions, period rooms and a haunted room! Ely's tourist Information Centre is located here. A ghost tour of Ely's haunted past is worth a visit.
Ely has an attractive waterside area, with its pub, restaurants and antiques centre. In the summer there are daily boat trips to Cambridge.
Also, there is ample local fishing by arrangement.

In August, my husband and I made an unexpected stop in Ely. After spending a lovely afternoon touring the Catheral and the surrounding grounds, we attempted to find a place to stay. This turned out to be challenging and so we were greatly relieved to find the Sycamore House was able to provide us with accommodation. Our host, Linda, insisted that we see the room before accepting it and apologetically described it as the "emergency room". The room turned out to be large, clean, pleasantly decorated and had a wonderful view of the expansive back yard ... with our relief turning to pleasure, we stayed the night, had a great sleep, a wonderful breakfast, and delightful conversation with our hosts and other guests. My only regret was that we couldn't stay in Ely longer ... if we ever have the opportunity to return, we will definitely book a "regular room" at the Sycamore House. DeltaMolly Date of Stay: August 2009
